Stroke Recovery

Stroke Recovery

Stroke occurs when a blood vessel feeding the brain bursts or is clogged, causing a sudden disruption in the blood flow to the brain.

Stroke is the third leading killer in North America, resulting in the following statistics annually:

  • 750,000+ victims
  • 160,000 deaths (3rd leading cause of death)
  • 266,000 survivors with permanent disabilities
  • 30,000 new permanent admissions to nursing homes
  • Over 4 million living survivors of stroke
  • Every 45 seconds in the USA, someone has a stroke
  • Huge economic impact with costs of $40-$70 billion per year

Carotid artery disease is the leading cause of strokes. More than 50% of stroke victims present no warning signs. After the age of 55, the risk of stroke doubles every 10 years. Most significantly, 97% of the adult population cannot name a single warning sign of a stroke.

STROKE RECOVERY CASE

March 27, 2008. To: Whom This May Concern: It has been my pleasure to be a patient of Dr. Young Jern for the last two months. I had a devastating stroke May 1st, 2007 which left me paralyzed on my left side. I couldn’t move and had no sensation in my left arm, my left foot and toes. The left side of my face was paralyzed and drooped. I had been in the hospital for seven months and I was depressed and privately contemplating suicide. When I had my first visit I showed up in a wheelchair. I believe Dr. Jern is a miracle-maker! He PATIENTLY measured my energy and applied his acupuncture techniques on my body in a way that I always felt a little better every day. I was in Eagle Ridge Hospital this morning for a physiotherapy assessment and the therapist told me this was the first time that I showed I could recover fully! I can now raise my left hand and touch my face. I can move and have sensation in my foot and toes and my nose. I can walk short distances and can use the bus and Skytrain and BC Ferry. The facial droop is gone! My vision is better, I ’m no longer depressed and looking forward to going back to work and recovering fully. I firmly believe Dr. Jern saved my life and will always be indebted to him and his beautiful wife Clara. If I can ever help repay Dr. Jern for helping me get my life back I shall do that. If you have any questions to ask of me please call me at 604-723-0057. Warren Walker

Bell’s palsy case

One morning, October 2007, while I was brushing and rinsing my teeth, I have noticed something wrong with my lips because I was drooling uncontrollably but I thought it would be ok soon. During breakfast my left eye was shedding tears and one side of my jaws was immobile. The next day, the condition has worsened. While taking my meals I couldn’t chew my food and the left side of my face – including left ear - became disabled. So I visited an Acupuncture clinic in Port Moody, and I had treatments for a week but there was no progress. With no results, I became very depressed as well as very sensitive. While I gradually lost hope, one of my friends introduced BC Alternative Medical center to me. Receiving treatments at BC Alternative Medical center, I felt my face improving to normal condition and, after 9 days of treatments, almost 95% of my problem has resolved and the whole left section of my face became fully functional again within following 3 weeks of additional treatments. Dr. Young Jern further approached my body’s problem by locating and treating the source of my problem – which was called “Bell’s palsy” - for next 1 month. At the end of the treatment, I felt my body rejuvenated and reinforced. Thanks Dr. Young and his staffs for retuning my body to normal in 2 months. Steven Kim

Positive thinking creates positive results

The power of positive thinking is especially important for quadriplegics and "locked in" patients and their caretakers to appreciate. If a person imagines moving an arm or leg, s/he is activating the same neurological pathways in the brain as if s/he were actually moving the paralyzed limb. Imagining the movement as occurring stimulates the brain injured areas (since it takes work by the brain to move the limb), and promotes the return of function by stimulating the nerve pathways. All of these positive changes in the brain and nerves can be demonstrated to be occurring with electrical detection techniques such as quantitative EEG.
